The ICC President Congratulates Most Rev Richard Clarke on his election as New Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland.

I wish Archbishop–elect Richard Clarke every blessing in the new ministry that lies before him. I have had the privilege of working with him in the Council for many years and was delighted to serve as his vice–president from 2010–2012. He has always served the church with focus, energy and vision. He is elected at a time when it is increasingly difficult for an authentic Christian voice to be heard and is well placed to express it.

While President of the Irish Council of Churches, Archbishop–elect Richard Clarke showed himself to be a gifted and natural leader. He brought a new energy to the work of inter–church co–operation. He was able to find solutions to seemingly insurmountable difficulties. He was always committed to showing that Christ is not divided and that his love for the world is not fragmented and impartial but is total and for all humankind. He has a deep personal faith with the love of God at the heart of his ministry. He has a clear vision and an wealth of ideas. He has the wisdom to listen and the courage to implement his decisions.

These are attributes that will equip him richly as he leads the Church of Ireland in the years ahead. I wish him every blessing and a fruitful ministry and look forward to working with him through the church and the Council as we continue in our vision of connecting in Christ.

Rev Fr Godfrey O’Donnell

President, Irish Council of Churches 2012–2014
