Lent 2014 Parables and Possessions

In 2012 the Church of Scotland General Assembly received the report of the Special Commission on the Purposes of Economic Activity – A right relationship with money.

For Lent 2014, a small writers group has produced a six–session study resource based upon this report. The group was chaired by Professor Charles Munn, who was Chair of the Special Commission.

Themes for the 6 weeks

Each session consists of four parts: Jesus’ Experiences – Lent themes; Jesus’ Teaching – Parables and Stories; Go and do likewise – what it means for us today; and Prayers.

Week 1: Temptation (wealth, possessions, consumerism)

Week 2:

Betrayal (where do our true values lie?)

Week 3:

Sacrifice (what do others give up for us, what do we give up for others?)

Week 4:

Forgiveness (Church of Scotland Lord’s Prayer talks about forgiving debts, not sins or trespasses)

Week 5:

Ridicule (trauma, prophetic voice, being disregarded)

Week 6:

Transformation (Christ’s love active in the world, not only for ourselves but for all humankind).

The resource will be available to download from the CTBI website in early November 2013.
